As recruitment consultants, we often hear people arguing that it’s very hard to find an ideal IT team for them or that recruiters don’t contact them enough with interesting IT roles. And we agree that finding a good job is not an easy task.

We also advise each candidate to ask himself/ herself if their skills are suited to the roles they apply for. Or if they have the right fit with the administrative requirements of the role (like taking on a full-time position, being in the location mentioned, or agreeing to the type of contract offered).

Also, we know that you can easily be tempted to think that, since you have a certain experience and messages keep pouring in with opportunities, someone will definitely contact you with that ideal change… But are you sure that you are visible enough on the recruitment platforms? Or, at least, have you updated your professional interests on your profile or portfolio? Sometimes the best opportunities aren’t found in your inbox, but in your own research within the companies that are of interest to you.

Applying to the proper role is the first step of your successful recruitment process for the IT role best suited for your experience and aspirations. So, below are some things to read when you apply for a job if you want to make sure you’re not wasting your time. They are important because if you don’t take them into consideration, you might get rejected right from the start – your CV/ application could be just viewed and you might not even be called for a first discussion.

So, before applying to a job, check:

  • The title. Is the title of the job relevant for your experience?

Some job titles are too general or they can be similar to the jobs from other domains. For example, ”QA” is not only for the IT domain, it also appears in the industrial one. A quality assurance specialist is different in the hardware industry compared to the software world.

Don’t apply only because your current role sounds similar to the job title: further read the job description.

  • The tech stack. Does the role have the tech stack you want?

If the role is named ”Front-end developer”, check in the job description if it is with Angular, with React, or Vue.js, if you have a preference for a certain framework. If you apply for a role, a recruiter assumes that you read the JD and you agree to work on that stack. Also check if the role requires previous experience with specific frameworks: even if you would like to switch to a different framework, make sure the employer would agree to you learning from scratch if you don’t have previous experience with that particular tech.

  • Remote working. Does the company offer the working set-up you want (remote/ hybrid/ only at the office)?

Companies have started to adapt to the requirements of the candidates and there are a lot of remote roles. But not all jobs offer full remote work. Most of the roles mention this in the title or in the description – just have a quick glance at that section before applying. Some might require you to come in a few times a week/month, while others offer remote opportunities only temporarily, until new working arrangements are made.

  • Type of collaboration. Does the role offer you the type of collaboration you need?

A lot of companies work on employment contracts. Don’t assume by default that they will also agree with contractor collaborations. Ask first if this is possible and under what conditions.

  • Mandatory skills. Are there any that suit your experience?

For example, there are a lot of specialists passionate about security or AI/ML. When you apply for a role in this domain, check if they ask for relevant experience/ certificates on this. In most cases, if a role doesn’t ask for relevant experience, the role probably is for a junior level, and if you are a mid-senior, it is not worth your time to apply.

And two more aspects to consider when you apply at IT jobs :

  • Applying for more roles within the same company… should you do it?

Theoretically, this increases your chances to be called for an interview and some companies do have completely separate processes for different jobs. But, practically, if you don’t meet the criteria for the roles to which you apply, the recruiter might have doubts about your real expertise – what is your real interest in the company and in the opportunities? Have you read the Job Description? Do you know to what you have applied? So, before applying, do make sure you checked the recommendations above.

  • Next steps in the process… should you be aware of them?

It is not mandatory, but some companies mention things like the need to sign a GDPR policy or time to receive an answer before moving on to specific subsequent recruitment steps. Pay attention to this because it can help you to quickly advance in the process. Also, this can give you hints on how to prepare for the next recruitment phases in order to land the job you want. (If you want more hints on this, you can also check our two other articles: How and why to prepare for a job change?, Do I really need to prepare for an interview?)

In conclusion, applying for all the jobs you encounter, regardless of your match with them, requires your time (as a candidate) and the recruiter’s time as well. And it can generate frustration on both sides when rejection messages are received (or no messages are received whatsoever).

For a smoother experience, pay attention to the role you apply for by checking the points listed above. This can also enhance your professional image and recruiters can better assess and propose good-fit projects for you in the future.

If you need some inspiration for a new challenge in your career, you can take a look at our IT roles sections on our website – https://www.edurom.ro/it-jobs/and start a discussion with one of our consultants.

The advantage for you would be that we, EDUROM Recruitment, are a Recruitment Agency. This means that after our discussion, we will know to get back in touch only with the relevant roles, suited for your experience and aspirations.

Using BELBIN in Recruitment https://www.edurom.ro/using-belbin-in-recruitment/ https://www.edurom.ro/using-belbin-in-recruitment/#respond Tue, 26 Apr 2022 10:14:27 +0000 https://www.edurom.ro/?p=3503 Using BELBIN in Recruitment Read More »

]]>
BELBIN is a methodology used to bring each individual’s behavioural “fingerprint” to the team, maximising the team’s potential and containing weaknesses. It can be used with teams, in management training, for leadership development, in recruitment and career development, for conflict management, for employee engagement, for personal development and coaching, in change management.  Of all these uses, below we are going to focus on recruitment

Why use BELBIN to select your next colleagues?

BELBIN shouldn’t be the only tool used in selection and recruitment, but it is a tool that could make the difference between a good fit and a poor one. Because, besides the entry criteria – which ensure an individual will be able to fulfill their responsibilities in the new job (such as meeting the mandatory qualifications, experience and possible references) – potential should also be assessed.

A candidate that ticks all boxes might be a short stayer if they don’t feel that their new job is challenging enough, if they feel couldn’t grow that much more professionally or if they don’t feel like they fit with the other team members.

This is where BELBIN comes in. While the qualifications and experience can be evaluated through interviews, aptitude/ knowledge tests and other methods, the potential and the fit to a group are a bit harder to evaluate if we don’t know what exactly to look for. BELBIN looks at behaviours and what kinds of contributions a person can bring to the team and to the role. What gaps they can fill and how they would mix with the others.

What does BELBIN offer you for assessing potential?

The information provided by the methodology is useful in both internal and external recruitments, allowing us to see potential from a more science-based perspective than just intuition. These are the BELBIN reports you can use to base your decision on:

  • Individual reports show us the main contributions in terms of Team Roles, as well as suggestions regarding the types of work the candidate could undertake and the possible mis-matches in terms of responsibilities.
  • Team reports show us where gaps in the group appear (from a Team Roles perspective) and how a candidate fits with the other teammates.
  • Working relationship reports compare two potential teammates to show how their collaboration could look like, what clashes could appear and how compatible they could be (attention: not similar, but compatible).
  • A compatibility report (resulted from comparing a Job Report and an Individual Report) show us, side by side, the expected behaviours for the job, as seen by those knowing the job well, and the profile of the candidate; this allows us to see how well the two overlap and what are the chances of a good fit with the job.

Things to keep in mind in using BELBIN in your recruitment process:

1/3. BELBIN works best when we have the full picture.

That means using the Self Perception and Observer Assessments (how I perceive myself as well as how others see me.) This is because others may notice traits unknown to the candidate, as well as offer a dose of objectivity. If there is an agreement between perspectives, we can be sure those Team Roles are strongly portrayed and well-seen. If differences appear between the two perspectives, we can look to analyse the reasons. For example, the differences between self and others’ perception can indicate:

  • wishful thinking (this is how I would like to be, yet others don’t see that/ this is how I do behave, but others don’t see that as strongly as they see other behaviours)
  • unknown potential (others may see behaviours the candidate isn’t aware of yet) OR
  • more different facets of the same individual (especially if different observers have seen different roles in the top).

However, if we consider external recruitment, adding observers might prove to be too difficult, as the candidate could be reluctant to ask their colleagues to fill in observer assessments so as not to raise suspicions about their intentions. We should always have in mind the confidentiality matters and the boundaries communicated by the candidate to ensure a smooth process. In this case, not having observers shouldn’t be a deal-breaker, but we should compare the results with the things noticed during the other interactions with the candidate.

2/3. The dropped points from the report show us how reliable the Self Perception is.

A too high number indicates lower reliability, as a larger number of points has been allocated to statements focusing more on likeability and not on real contributions inside a team. We should be wary of Self Perception-only reports that have a high number of dropped points and try to correlate that information with information gathered from the other selection steps.

3/3. BELBIN doesn’t give us a definite answer, but it is a tool that helps us to create a complete picture.

Thus, BELBIN should be used in addition to methods aimed to assess the knowledge and aptitudes of the candidates we consider hiring and should come to our aid in making the difference between those candidates that passed the initial selection steps. It can give us valuable information about the chances of a candidate being a good fit with the team and with the company culture. This way, you will ensure to create and build more stable and long-lasting teams. But a completely ineligible candidate, not meeting the required criteria, will hardly be able to perform despite their match with the team.

Happy recruiting!

Should I quit a freelancing activity for a ”9 to 5” job? https://www.edurom.ro/should-i-quit-a-freelancing-activity-for-a-9-to-5-job/ Wed, 22 Sep 2021 13:03:49 +0000 https://www.edurom.ro/?p=2695 Should I quit a freelancing activity for a ”9 to 5” job? Read More »

]]>
Freelancing can be associated with more free-time by all the employees who are exhausted because of their corporate life. As a freelancer, you can travel whenever you want, you can work from anywhere you want or with anyone you want…

Last year (2020), was a different year compared with others and 2021 continues to be unpredictable, challenging the adaptability skills. One of the changes we saw in our EDUROM Recruitment activity was to meet a lot of IT professionals who left their freelancing activity and accepted a job in a company.

If you are curious why, here are some arguments for making this decision:

  • Constant salary.

You don’t need to hunt  anymore for new clients or new projects to earn your money. You receive a constant salary each month for your job. And a bonus: it is no longer your role to accept or to reject a client.

  • Predefined working schedule.

This is important for your mental, physical and emotional health. There is an “out-of-office” message and an office phone number so you can skip clients who might disturb your vacation.

  • Working on a team.

This is important for building relationships. You can have a senior / manager who can advise you or you can have juniors to mentor them. Peers with whom to exchange ideas are also important, especially in problem-solving scenarios.

  • Career path and a clearly-defined role.

It is not so fun to have non-technical clients who ask you to redo your work outside the contract, right? Maybe it would be helpful to work only on a specific part of more complex projects. Specializing in a specific role can help you grow technically.

  • Access to up-to-date technologies.

Big companies can invest in new technologies, strong equipment, and relevant training programs. All of these are vital/ essential to a strong player from the industry.

  • Working for a big name.

The market grew a lot and there are a lot of big companies who opened offices in Romania, with interesting, impactful projects. Won’t be a proud moment when you tell a friend that you are working for a renowned company or for a company that have cool, challenging projects?

  • Flexible working hours and working remotely.

Nowadays, most companies agree on this type of benefit. Of course, there has to be a certain schedule because you have to be present in meetings, but you can find solutions easily.

As recruitment consultants, it is not our job to encourage employment or freelancing. In some industries such as IT, there is a lot of space for both and it depends on what you want, as an IT professional. But if you are a freelancer and you receive a message from a recruiter who proposes you a job, before saying “no”, why not try to answer yourself some questions? We recommend these ones to help you find out if it works for you to consider swapping a freelancing activity with a “9 to 5 job”:

  • What are the biggest advantages you have as a freelancer?
  • What are the biggest DISadvantages?
  • What are your financial needs?

We are sometimes tempted to want more and to take two jobs if possible. But when you do only your work (you = not a one-man-show) and you earn a constant, monthly salary, what is the minimum desired?

  • What advantages do you see to working in a team?

If you are a technical guy/ girl, how much satisfaction can you see from client-negotiation discussions? Or do you value knowledge-sharing for your professional growth?

In the end, we encourage each professional to talk with a recruiter to find more information regarding the projects he/she manages. You don’t have anything to lose, you can actually find some interesting things that are happening in the industry. After this, all the administrative details for collaboration can be solved, so that they best fit your objectives and needs.
